Details add to any carving. Feathers are tough to carve but worth the practice. Some simple hair ties, and a head dress, along with those feathers, can make a carving really pop! I am considering not cutting in pupils. What do you think?
This guys was fun. I loved the way his hair ended up. I did not plan it this way but some times things are revealed and work out as the art progress.
My brother Mark was over and he is retired from the United States Coast Guard. My Sailor carving was perfect for him. They both have a beard and all, had it been winter, the hats would have matched too! Great spending some time together. He loved it and that bring me joy when the gift bring joy!!
Carved this one. I added a feather and also a hair tie. Used a great book “Carving the Native American Face” by Terry Kramer and also a carving by Alec Lacasse.
Finished this guy tonight. He is smaller than normal. Cottonwood can be splity, and the nose came off at one point. I got it back on though. I thought the cheekbones looked good, but I have a lot of work to do yet learning noses and lips.
Started this project with some of that amazing cottonwood bark from Canada. It carves so sweet. I am taking my time as I don’t want to mess up this great piece of bark. I am continuing to push myself forward to learn more and get better at carving.
